User centred agile Xamarin development for RCPCH

Mobile app helps front line staff deliver children’s health

With information available at our fingertips today, it is frustrating when you have to wait.  Especially if that wait means a delay in children’s healthcare.  Using Microsoft’s cross-platform development software Xamarin and the Azure cloud, Software Solved developed a secure mobile app that brings immediate guidance at the point of care. The app works anywhere, on any device and with or without an internet connection to support decisions in real-time.

Business need: Poor connectivity and lack of available hardware

RCPCH (Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) edit and manage PCO (Paediatric Care Online), an online decision support tool for anyone working with children.  PCO also contains a repository of supporting reference material and patient/carer information with tools that cover symptoms and critical care situations. These provide clinically assured advice and guidance at the point of care for children in the UK. Often however in hospitals or surgeries or nurseries and more, access to a computer is limited or wifi is poor, causing delays in diagnosis and treatment options.

Solution: Azure based Xamarin mobile app for offline availability

There were three aspects to the solution: User engagement, the Xamarin mobile app and the back-end Azure system.  Xamarin was chosen because it is efficient and cost effective - coding once for both Android and iOS saved RCPCH £40,000.

Given the volume of information within PCO, the back-end system was built in Azure for scalability and cost efficiency.  The bespoke rich text editor is straightforward for content owners to use, a key objective, as most are paediatricians not digital experts.

APIs connect the app to the Azure system with third party authentication using the native (iOS and Android) mechanisms for utmost security.  With user credentials stored, there is no need to re-enter them, making the critical information within the app available quickly.

30 clinicians were involved in extensive user testing of the app for which Software Solved created a bespoke user guide.  We also handled all of the uploads and approvals in the Google Play and iTunes Connect stores making the overall process as seamless as possible for our client.

Results: Right information at the right time to make decisions

The feedback from doctors and frontline staff, during the user centred design process and  delivery has been incredible.  The ability to have clinically assured information at the point of care has made diagnosis and treatment much quicker.  The app is clean and easy to use, critical in situations where speed is of the essence. Watch the video below to hear feedback from the clinicians.

The Software Solved difference:

  • User research and testing
  • Xamarin cross-platform mobile expertise
  • Microsoft Azure development
  • Bespoke API development
