Moving to the cloud: cloud computing options

Many organisations move to the cloud because it’s cost-effective, easier to manage and responsive to changing demands. However if you are unfamiliar with the cloud, you risk becoming baffled by all the acronyms and services available.

Here we summarise the main cloud options to help get you started.

Types of Cloud Computing

SaaS – Software as a Service

Definition: Applications run directly from a web server eliminating the need to install software on your business devices.

PaaS – Platform as a Service

Definition: The server, storage and operating system is supplied by a third party so you can focus on your applications.

IaaS – Infrastructure as a Service

Definition: Access to the physical hardware in a datacentre based on consumption so you only pay for what you use.

Public Cloud

Definition: A Cloud provider makes resources available to everyone, over the internet.

Private Cloud

Definition: Resources are dedicated to your business through proprietary architecture.

Hybrid Cloud

Definition: Host data in the private cloud (or on premise) and public cloud but allow data to flow between the platforms.

PAYG – Pay as you go

Definition: The ‘utility’ payment method often used in cloud computing whereby resources are paid for based on usage.
